Yemisi Wilson, 1968, Great Britain, based in Sweden

There is a white marble sculpture depicting a pregnant woman with curly hair standing with her right arm behind her torso grasping her left forearm.

With closed eyes, the pregnant woman listens to the life she carries. Here, in the courtyard at Örebro Castle, the wings of history can also be heard. People have lived in and near the castle for more than seven and a half centuries.

Generation after generation, women have given birth to their babies. Modern humans are believed to have been on the Earth for at least 200,000 years. This work of art confronts us with life itself – and thereby the great questions of life’s survival on this planet.

Yemisi Wilson creates her works in reverence for life and for the natural stones she works with. Marble, alabaster and porphyry have been shaped for millions of years and bear witness to different epochs in the earth’s development.
