The Future is Classy, Crisis is Sexy

The selfie – the self-portrait from a phone’s camera – is an undeniable part of Örebro today. On large screens in the city’s malls and shop windows, selfies from other cities are displayed. Bianca Hisse uses the everyday selfie to examine public spaces and their multifaceted meanings. A square, a parliament and a historical building are at once both subjects for countless tourist photographs and arenas for political demonstrations and protests. ‘The Future is Classy, Crisis is Sexy’ exclaims the title of the work. In the format of the selfie – and in manipulated tempo – Hisse clarifies how the image, language and topical political issues permeate the life of the city.
